Depthworks Bahamas offers trauma-focused scuba diving treatment for PTSD and other mental health conditions.
The Depthworks deep dive treatment protocol was developed after Kevin James read a John’s Hopkin’s University study that suggested that scuba-diving significantly reduced PTSD symptoms. Living and working as a dive instructor near Dean’s Blue Hole in Long Island, The Bahamas, Kevin realised he had a unique opportunity to help… and the work began.
Since 2019, Kevin, supported by his wife Audrey, have welcomed 19 PTSD or Complex PTSD sufferers to Long Island in The Bahamas. Working with them one-on-one basis for between 10-14 days, Kevin accompanied them through an intensive, evidence-informed course of scuba diving at depth (within industry standards) in one of the world’s deepest and most beautiful blue holes – Dean’s Blue Hole
Every person who received the treatment left the island symptom-free.
For 7 years, Kevin and Audrey have worked alongside Progress Through Scuba Diving, a UK based charity that focused on supporting UK Armed Forces personnel who suffer PTSD from combat experiences. They supported many of the 19 participants who met the criteria of being UK combat veterans suffering from PTSD or Complex PTSD.
We know that PTSD can come from a range of experiences. We know that our deep diving treatment approach is proven to work to relieve PTSD symptoms. We also know that debilitating mental health experiences (such as anxiety, depression, OCD, addiction and risk taking behaviour) associated with PTSD have shown promising signs of relief or reduction in severity in people we have worked with. So we want to do more, for more people.
